The SPCA stands for the "Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals".

It is a voluntary organisation set up by the people in the community who are interested in, and want to do something about the welfare of animals.

The RNZSPCA mission is to advance the welfare of all animals in New Zealand by -

• preventing cruelty to animals,

• alleviating suffering of animals

• promoting our policies through education and advocacy.

The Taupo branch promotes and adheres to the above mission statement with -

Inspectors and Auxiliary Officers in the Field

These Inspectors give instruction for mitigating suffering, or arrange euthanasia when necessary.

Inspectors and other personnel visit schools, kindies, Guides, Brownies and other groups to promote responsible pet ownership.

Some serve on committees where animals are either used or at risk, to speak out for the animals involved.

The branch also runs an animal shelter where lost animals are often reunited with their owners and unwanted animals rehomed. There is a world wide overpopulation of companion animals and Taupo is no exception. Sadly, many animals do have to be put to sleep because there are simply not enough homes for them.
